New Fish Market at Barcelona Port

2020-2029 | Barcelona, Spain | Facility.

New Fish Market at Barcelona Port

The building houses the new fish auction facilities at the Port of Barcelona – a primary sector activity – as well as new areas for the Fishermen's Guild.

The building has been organised into three clearly differentiated blocks, each corresponding to specific functions and different processes directly related to the functional needs of auctions for the different types of catch – trawling and seine fishing – and a quay for boats; as well as the preparation, packaging and dispatch of fish by wholesalers.

These volumetrically independent blocks are connected by porches and walkways that allow perfect communication and protection for the fish. Of the three blocks making up the building, the central one is for the Guild and the administration and management of the complex and is set back from the alignment of the other two. Its western facade overlooks an open courtyard around which the entrances and main functions are structured.

The ground floor is surrounded by a walkway accessed directly from the outside by a ramp that begins next to the Clock Tower, allowing the general public to see all the processes of unloading and auctioning the fish up close, without interfering with the professionals’ work. It will also allow direct access to the future restaurant.

The North Block, next to the entrance to the Fishing Quay and the Clock Tower, is entirely intended for buyers’ activities.

As well as incorporating the ice factory, the South Block contains, on its ground floor, the box warehouse and the canteen for exclusive use by fishermen.

The exterior finish is cast panel cladding, cast in a workshop from molten aluminium poured by gravity into steel die moulds.
